Smart Home Installation Services Backed by Real Electrical Work
A Family Electrical Contractor Working in Cypress Since the 1980s
A smart home is only as reliable as the wiring behind it. Cypress homeowners find this out the hard way when a smart switch keeps dropping off the network because the box has no neutral, or a bank of smart fixtures flickers because the circuit was never sized for what got added to it. The app is the easy part. The electrical work underneath it is what decides whether any of it holds up.
Kirchner Electric is a family-owned electrical contractor based on Grant Road in Cypress. Dennis Kirchner built the company in the 1980s, and his son Blake took over in 2020, so the same family has been wiring houses in this part of Harris County for decades. We handle smart home system installation for homeowners, remodelers, and custom builders across Cypress and the Northwest Houston area, which means we do the wiring, the circuits, the power, and the device installation, then get your equipment on the network and running.

What Smart Home System Installation Actually Involves
The Wiring and Power Work Behind Every Connected Device
Most smart devices need something a standard box does not always have. Smart switches and dimmers usually need a neutral conductor, which plenty of older Cypress homes do not have at the switch location. Video doorbells need a transformer with enough capacity. Smart panels and load controllers need space and a proper connection at the service equipment. Cameras, access points, and hardwired sensors need low-voltage runs pulled to places nobody planned for when the house was framed.
That is the work we do. On a typical smart home installation project, we handle:
If the panel turns out to be the real constraint, we will say so rather than stack more onto it. That work is covered on our Electrical Panel Services page.
Smart Home Automation for Lighting, Thermostats, and Irrigation
Smart Lighting Installation and Control
Lighting is where most homeowners start, and it is the part of smart home automation that pays off fastest. We install smart switches and dimmers, smart recessed and pendant fixtures, motion and occupancy sensors, and controlled exterior and landscape lighting. If you want kitchen and living areas on one control scheme, or exterior lighting on a schedule that follows sunset instead of a clock, the switching and wiring have to be laid out for it on the front end. We plan the circuits and switch legs around how you actually want to control the space, then install and test it.
For homes where the lighting design itself is the project, our Interior Lighting and Exterior/Outdoor Lighting pages covers that side of the work.
Smart Panels and Whole-Home Energy Management
EG4 GridBOSS and FlexBOSS21 System Installation
The most capable thing in a smart home is usually not a speaker or a switch. It is the equipment deciding where your power goes. Kirchner Electric installs the EG4 GridBOSS, a microgrid interconnect device that acts as one connection point for utility power, hybrid inverters, batteries, a generator, and smart loads, with a 200-amp service entrance rating. We install the EG4 FlexBOSS21 hybrid inverter and EG4 WallMount battery storage alongside it.
For smart home purposes, the part that matters most is load management. The GridBOSS gives you four programmable smart load ports, rated 125, 80, 60, and 60 amps, that can shed or shift specific loads based on time-of-use periods or battery state of charge. In practice that means a pool pump, an EV charger, or a shop circuit can be set to run when power is cheapest or when your battery has capacity to spare, and to stand down when it does not. Monitoring and configuration run through the EG4 app, so you can see where your power is going and change how the system behaves without opening the enclosure.
The FlexBOSS21 is the piece doing the conversion work. It is a split-phase hybrid inverter built for homes and small commercial buildings, rated for 12kW of continuous output on batteries alone and up to 16kW when solar is contributing, with a 90-amp grid feed-through. It is also rated to start a five-ton air conditioner, which in a Houston August is the difference between a house you can stay in during an outage and one you cannot. Breakers for the smart ports, inverter, and generator input are specified separately based on how your system is laid out.
If your interest is backup power during an outage, or bringing a standby generator into a battery system, that side of the work lives on our Generators page.
Smart Home Pre-Wire for New Construction and Remodels
Getting the Infrastructure In Before the Drywall Goes Up
The cheapest time to wire a smart home is when the walls are still open, and the most expensive time is two years later. We work with custom home builders and remodelers across Cypress, Katy, Tomball, and the surrounding Northwest Houston area on smart home pre-wire during rough-in, so the house is ready for whatever gets specified at finish-out.
At the rough-in stage we can lay in structured cabling to media, office, and equipment locations, dedicated circuits for high-draw equipment, conduit and pathways so future runs do not mean opening walls, box and neutral provisions at every switch location intended for smart control, exterior power and data for cameras and gate hardware, and panel capacity planned around the actual connected load rather than a guess. Builders working on spec homes tell us the pre-wire is one of the easier features to show a buyer, because it costs relatively little at framing and it is the one thing a buyer cannot add later without tearing into finished walls.
One Contractor for the Electrical Side of the Whole Project
How the Work Divides on a Smart Home Job
Most smart home projects touch more than one trade, and the electrical side is usually the part that has to be right before anything else works. We take that whole side of it. The panel review, the circuits, the switch and box work, the low-voltage runs, the device mounting and wiring, the exterior power, and getting what we installed powered up, connected, and tested before we leave. You are not coordinating three subcontractors to get a lighting scheme working.
We are electricians, so we handle the wiring, the power, and the devices themselves, and we do not service heating and cooling equipment or repair appliances. If a thermostat swap turns up a problem with the system behind it, we will tell you what we found and who to call. While we get the equipment we install connected and running, ongoing network management and long-term support for a connected house is a different specialty than ours.
Tell us what the finished house is supposed to do when you call. If part of it belongs to another trade, we would rather say so up front than turn it up on install day.
How a Smart Home Installation Project Runs
The On-Site Visit, the Quote, and the Install
Smart home projects vary too much to price over the phone. What one homeowner calls smart lighting is four switches, and what the next one calls smart lighting is a rewire of the whole first floor. So we come look.
- 1You call or send a request, and we talk through what you want the house to do and what equipment you already own or have picked out.
- 2We come to the property for an on-site visit. There is a $250 fee for that visit, and it is applied as a credit when your project starts. We look at the panel, the switch locations, the routing, and the equipment, because that is the only way to quote the job accurately instead of guessing and revising later.
- 3You get a written quote covering the electrical work, the device installation, and anything the panel or existing wiring needs first.
- 4We schedule the work and do it, keeping the mess contained and the house livable while we are in it.
- 5We power everything up, connect the equipment we installed, test it with you, and show you how it works before we leave.
If something we installed is not behaving after we go, call us. We would rather come back and sort it out.
